“Quo”, the top Spanish popular science magazine, learned about the Best Visual Illusion of the Year Contest and wanted to participate with a parallel contest in which Quo’s readers could vote for the Best Visual Illusion of the Year. Quo asked the judge panel to select 10 “static” illusions (so that they could be printed in the magazine). Quo’s July 2005 issue featured the 10 best static illusions, and the readers submitted their votes to Quo’s offices. The winner of the Quo award was “The world’s largest lightness illusion”, by Bart Anderson and Jon Winawer (University of South Wales, Australia & MIT, USA). Jon Winawer accepted Quo’s award plaque during the Best Visual Illusion of the Year Contest award ceremony.
