Authors description: I have been a collector and promoter of gadgets and curiosities for many years. This sphere with a spiral slot is one of my favorite spinners. I painted the slot white to make the effect more attractive. I discovered this illusion of movement when I put the sphere to spin on an inner mirror vertex. The sphere seems to go backwards when spinning clockwise and forwards when spinning counterclockwise. The effect is more noticeable when the sphere is brought closer to the mirrors and when orange caps are placed as reference. As with other illusions such as chromostereopsis, some people don’t perceive the illusion of movement.
